Without a doubt. You only need to think about what the Olympics did for Barcelona. More generally, a city’s football club is its single biggest ambassador while its cultural attractions play a massive role in promoting a city on the national stage and internationally. That’s why Leeds is bidding to be a host city for the 2018 World Cup (www.backthebidleeds.com). Before then, 2012 will see the new Leeds Arena open and hopefully – somewhere in between – Leeds United will be back playing Premiership football!
I think the impact is major. For once from the PR & branding point of view. Such an event upgrades the branding of a city on a scale from 0 to 5 from none to maximum.
Than we shoul also comment of the economic, financial, industrial and every aspects of the market that this event will touch. Some things can change forever such as architecture.
The last but not the list is the huge investment a city is supposed to make in order to host such a game.
